In 2026, WMSRDC began working with Yates Township to update the township’s existing master plan, which was originally issued in 2010.
Master plans play an essential role in land use and development of a community. Although the master plan is not an enforceable document, it provides legal justification for a community’s enforceable zoning ordinances.
Yates Township is home to Historic Idlewild in Lake County, MI. This planning process will strive to align ongoing community initiatives and provide a community-supported vision for future land use, development, and historic preservation.
Public Input
Public engagement is a core component of the master planning process. Comments from residents and community stakeholders are gathered and used by the Planning Commission to help form Goals & Objectives that are in-line with the community’s needs and desires.
The Yates Township Planning Commission hosted a facilitated public meeting on August 10, 2026. In addition, a survey is available to community residents and stakeholders through September 7, 2026. How to take the survey:

- Download the survey to print at home. Paper copies may be filled out and returned to City Hall.
In addition to monthly Planning Commission meetings, where residents may follow efforts to update the master plan, the public will be invited to participate in the planning process once a proposed document is approved by the Township Board for public review. This is expected to take place early in 2027. The proposed master plan update will be made available for inspection and comment for 63 days. This period will be followed by a public hearing to receive comments specific to the content of the proposed master plan update.
