Shelby Township in Oceana County maintains three cemeteries: Mt. Hope Cemetery, New Era Cemetery, and Oceana Center Cemetery.
Mt. Hope Cemetery spans 37 acres, contains 8 sections, and has a total of 8,322 graves.
New Era Cemetery is located on Ray Street in New Era and covers 8.3 acres. There are a total 1,700 grave sites. Seventy of these grave sites are crypts and 700 are occupied graves.
Oceana Center Cemetery is located on 112th Street, just south of Baseline Road. It is a very small cemetery spanning just 1.5 acres and contains 365 graves; just under half are occupied.
The existing information for these three cemeteries, including maps and other reference data, was provided by Shelby Township. WMSRDC’s GIS program consolidated and corrected the databases and created digital map layers for each cemeteries’ boundaries, sections, lots, graves, and crypts.
These lovely old cemeteries have some very old headstones and memorial markers, the earliest one dating back to a birth date of 1799. You can explore the maps by opening the online map above and typing in the name of a family member or loved one resting here. The map will show you where their grave is located and information such as date of birth, date of death, family relation or Veteran information.
