Leavitt Township, located in Oceana County, Michigan, manages three small local cemeteries. Abson Cemetery contains 678 graves over 4.5 acres and has two main sections. The west side contains the newer section with the east side being the older section. Carpenter Cemetery contains 961 graves over 3.75 acres. Goodrich Cemetery holds roughly 400 graves over 1.5 acres.

The township clerk and deputy clerk provided WMSRDC’s GIS program with their historical records and previously drawn maps to digitally recreate the correct cemetery boundaries, rows, lots, and graves. Groundwork was completed in each cemetery to verify the location of and data about each occupant. Pictures were also taken of all the headstones, and the above online map was created. Township staff and residents can use the map to look up specific names or pan around the cemeteries to view occupants and headstone pictures. The online map can be used on mobile devices within the cemetery and will help residents locate specific graves.
