Near-MISS

What is Near-MISS?

Traditionally, traffic safety monitoring has relied almost exclusively on historical crash data to identify “hot spots” and prioritize infrastructure improvements. While these statistics provide a clear record of where harm has occurred, they are inherently reactive, often requiring a significant number of incidents to happen before a location is flagged for intervention. Furthermore, crash data frequently misses the “silent” dangers of our streets, such as unreported minor collisions or the experiences of vulnerable road users who may avoid certain areas altogether due to perceived risk.

Our Near-Miss Survey (Missed Incident Safety Survey) aims to bridge this gap by capturing proactive, real-time safety data. By documenting the “close calls” that never make it into a police report, we can:

  • Identify emerging patterns before a serious injury occurs.
  • Highlight systemic design flaws in the transportation network.
  • Incorporate the lived experience of cyclists, pedestrians, and transit users.

This supplemental data provides a more granular and preventative view of road safety, allowing us to build a more resilient and responsive transportation system for everyone.

Help Us Build  A Safer Community!

Your voice is vital to our mission of striving towards zero roadway fatalities. By continually using this anonymous, 2-minute survey you can help us make more informed decisions to improve traffic safety for all users in our region. This survey is intended solely for data collection and analysis. Any trends identified from the submissions will be shared with local and regional partners.
