Overview
While modern Geographic Information Systems (GIS) started in earnest at WMSRDC at the turn of the century, mapping has always been an integral part of the planning process. Beginning in the 1970s, WMSRDC used traditional mylar and hand drafted maps for use in local planning and transportation plans. It wasn't until the mid-1990s that maps began to be digitized using early GIS software such as Caliper and Maptitude. The introduction of digitized data and maps allowed for more advanced analysis of project areas and the incorporation of census data. The addition of attributes and data built into spatial data created a much more dynamic view of old projects. In 2012, WMSRDC hired its first full-time GIS Specialist to expand its geospatial services for its program areas. These expanded services led to the creation of several enhanced planning efforts including community wildfire protection plans, transit models for environmental justice, and invasive species monitoring. In 2015, WMSRDC continued to expand its GIS capacity by partnering and coordinating with Muskegon County and other local GIS departments. At the same time, it introduced GIS centric projects beyond the scope of programmatic support such as cemetery mapping, bridge structure safety, and configuring interactive online experiences for the public to explore and visualize data. WMSRDC's GIS program hopes to broaden its technical assistance into smaller local governments to help with infrastructure asset management and mapping, planning, and projects that otherwise would be prohibitive. Today, the GIS services at WMSRDC are integral to the Transportation Planning, Environmental Planning, Local Government Services, and Economic Development programs that are offered.
While some communities have GIS capabilities, others may lack the staff or software to manage spatial data or mapping projects. WMSRDC is proud to provide GIS services and expertise to our region. Utilizing our ESRI ArcGIS Online Organization, our team can assist you in the digitization and maintenance of assets such as public utilities, infrastructure, multi-modal transportation systems, zoning districts, recreation, and other data as requested. ESRI software enables our team to develop internal planning dashboards for asset management and external mapping applications for public consumption. We are eager to help you leverage GIS technology for efficient planning and decision-making.
