WMSRDC is the designated air quality planning agency for Muskegon and northern Ottawa counties. In this role, WMSRDC works with local governments, the State of Michigan, and regional partners to support air quality planning, education, and implementation.
Clean Air Action Program
WMSRDC participates in the Clean Air Action Program, which encourages residents, businesses, and local governments to voluntarily reduce emissions on days when air pollution is expected to reach unhealthy levels. The program addresses both ground-level ozone and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and operates year-round.
When a Clean Air Action Day is issued, residents are encouraged to take simple voluntary actions, such as:
- Carpooling or using public transit
- Limiting unnecessary driving
- Delaying lawn mowing and refueling during the summer
- Reducing outdoor physical activity when air quality is poor
West Michigan Clean Air Coalition
WMSRDC is a member of the West Michigan Clean Air Coalition (WMCAC), a regional partnership formed in 1995 that includes businesses, educational institutions, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and community partners. The coalition promotes voluntary actions that improve air quality through public education and outreach.
Air Quality Alerts
WMSRDC also promotes EnviroFlash, a free service from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that delivers air quality forecasts and alerts by email or text message, helping residents plan outdoor activities when poor air quality is expected.
WMSRDC is also a partner in the EPA's It All Adds Up to Cleaner Air initiative, which encourages everyday choices that reduce traffic congestion, lower emissions, and improve community air quality.
